In the guided activity, students classify 12 solids as ionic solids, covalent network solids, molecular solids, or metallic solids based on properties they test. Students learn about the intramolecular forces and intermolecular forces that affect the strength of attraction between atoms.
In the inquiry activity, students test the properties of 4 solids, develop their own set of characteristics to distinguish between each bonding type, and then apply their rules to classify 8 additional solids. The inquiry activity provides an opportunity for students to present their experiment's design and results, reinforcing the practice of communicating findings. Detailed preparation and procedure notes guide you through leading a successful inquiry exercise, including a suggested rubric for assessing student performance.
Both activities include assessment questions that follow the format of the AP® Chemistry Exam free-response questions. In the assessment, students apply their new knowledge of intermolecular and intramolecular forces to explain observed trends in boiling point, melting point, and solubility of substances.
