Carolina Investigations® for AP® Environmental Science: Biomass to Biofuel: Grasses for Ethanol Production
This lab activity guides students in the design of their own experiment testing various pretreatments of grass to maximize glucose production that could ultimately be used to produce ethanol fuel. Students follow a guided activity to examine the effect of mechanical grinding on enzymatic digestion of cellulose. Student groups test experimental variables, such as pH, heat pretreatment, or some combination of these, to optimize the digestion of cellulose into glucose.
