These kits are designed to initiate and teach handling of plaque-forming bacteriophages. Special attention is given to serial dilution and the production of plaques by the agar-layer technique.

During The Effect of Mutation on Plaque Morphology and Disease Progression Kit (items #124311 and #124311P), students look at the difference in plaque morphology between plates infected with the 2 strains of coliphage. They then observe how small mutations in the genome of a bacteriophage can change the progression of its infection of its host bacteria.

With the Host Specificity and Plaque Morphology Kit (items #124316 and #124316P), students plate 2 different bacteriophages on 2 different host bacteria. Afterward, they observe that Φ X174 is only able to infect one of the host bacteria and that the plaques formed by the 2 different phages are very different in size.

The kits are suitable for individual projects or class exercises (instructions are written for 1 to 2 groups of 4 students each).
