For a class of 30. Acetic acid bacteria are used in the commercial production of vinegar (acetic acid). The bacteria oxidize ethanol to form acetic acid. Students culture 2 acetic acid bacteria on bromcresol green agar containing ethanol. As the ethanol is oxidized, students can observe a color change in the agar. The history of vinegar-making technique is included. The exercise requires 4 to 6 days from setup to completion.
Note:Keep bacteria and fungus cultures at room temperature; do not incubate or refrigerate.
