Rated 5 out of 5 by from An amazing experience I ordered these a year or two ago for me and my class. They all arrived alive except for two, which is very good! They dug around for a bit and seemed generally happy. The next week I had them transferred to our classroom. The beetles were very educational and my teacher and fellow classmates loved doing the "penny pull" experiment with them. The bessbugs lasted about a year and a half, eventually dying off the next summer. I kept the last two as pets for a while until they died off as well. The only complaint I have is that it is pretty expensive. Almost 60 dollars plus shipping for only 12? Oh well. It was a very good product and me and my class had fun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is great for conducting the penny pull and as an easy classroom pet! I have written grants several years in a row to fund the purchase of bess bugs from Carolina. I teach kindergarten and they love counting how many pennies the bugs are able to pull, and then comparing that to their own weight and how much that would mean they would be able to pull. Afterwards, they are a class favorite when it comes to pets-even the girls love getting them out and watching them crawl around. They are very easy to care for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous, charismatic beetles! I have ordered bess beetles twice from Carolina Biological. They are a must-have for anyone interested in teaching about insects. I have used them with ages 2-adult and everyone is instantly fascinated by these beetles. The penny pull activity is great fun for all ages and the squeaking sounds they make is a wonderful way to teach about how insects produce sound (in this case, stridulation). The large size of these beetles makes them useful in showing people insect body parts. Live specimens are fabulous for this because you can actually see parts, like the mandibles, moving and get and appreciation for how they work. My first set of bess beetles lasted nearly a year. I just ordered another 12 to use in my college level entomology course.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from fun for summer camp Great for the kids, and nice to have a native insect to show them. I just wish they weren't quite so expensive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bessbugs Carry The Load The bessbugs arrived approximately before I taught a minicamp on entomology for 4th-7th graders. In addition to reviewing insect characteristics, the children observed beetle characteristics. They particularly enjoyed the two activities we did with them: Bessbug Beetle Race and Bessbug Beetle Haul. Some of the beetles drug more than 16 times their own mass. All were happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Squeaky beetles Very cool beetles that squeak in reaction to stimuli. Very docile beetles, fun to hold, easy to care for. Interesting for people of all ages. My only complaint was that the first order arrived with 25% of the beetles dead. But Carolina Biological gratiously replaced the entire order.
