How-To & Techniques

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Economical & Well Packaged I like the Nutrient Agar Kit and recommend it. I noticed some reviews commenting on difficulties melting the agar. I've had no problems. What works for me is either sticking the bottles in pans of boiling water until they melt or microwaving them 30 seconds at a time (cap off) until they melt. Think of it like melting chocolate -- it just takes a bit of patience to not burn the chocolate until POOF! it's suddenly ready. (Possibly the instructions may be a bit off; I can't say, because quite honestly I didn't read them.) If you melt the agar a bit too early for students to use them, no problem -- you can always heat 'em up a bit more. I noticed one review questioning cost of kit versus separate components. I think Carolina offers good value with the kit, especially for those of us buying smaller quantities for one classroom or a homeschool co-op. If you buy #741250 (set of twenty dishes sized 100 x 15mm) + four bottles of #776362 agar (125 ml each), then you will spend more than the cost of the kit -- and not even get the 10 packets of sterile swabs (each packet has two). The kit's cardboard box is a good size for packing & transport, too.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very very difficult to melt it I don't know if others have experienced the same as mine --- I put the bottle in water bath of 85-90 C, the medium still was not completely melted even after I waited for nearly 10 hours. It still contained a lot of un-melted chunks, resulting in very uneven agar surface after pouring into plates. The LOT # of my order is 25262.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lumpy The petri dishes and agar arrived as described; however, it was not easy to heat up. Theoretically, you just place it in a pan of hot water, but it was quite difficult to tell when it was melted. The agar looked all melted, but when I poured it, it came out in lumps. Then I tried shaking it so the unmelted lumps would melt, but that just ended up with foamy bubbles that never went away. The agar grew colonies well, but we didn't get clean separate colony growth because of the lumps and bubbles. I would recommend spending the extra money and buying the plates pre-poured.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Agar Media Kit Quick delivery. Wish I could buy the agar separately from the Petri dishes. Might be cheaper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fun and educational I used it with 6th and 7th grade gifted classes. The students took cultures from around the school. They were amazed by how much microorganisms there were. Looking toward to doing that lesson again.
