During seasons with very low or high temperature fluctuations, we reserve the right to hold shipments to ensure the health of our organisms. This may briefly delay shipments during those periods. Carolina makes raising and studying painted lady butterflies easy with our 5-larvae culture cup. We ship larvae in a clear, self-contained 8-oz culture cup so children can easily observe caterpillar development. There is no food to mix and nothing to set up. Caterpillars simply eat the medium supplied in the culture cup until they form a chrysalis. Children then hang up the chrysalises in the habitat. After 7-10 days, the adult butterflies will emerge hungry. Make sure you provide sugar water for the adults to eat.

Shipping and handling is included with this price. Click Add to Cart to calculate your 50% off promotional savings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Painted Lady Butterfly WOW! I ordered two Painted Lady Butterfly larvae containers for my two grandaughters (8 + 5 years). They larvae all arrive quickly and in good health. The girls were excited about the whole adventure we were about to take. and watched to larvae through out the next days. They waited were always wondering when the larvae traveled to the top of the container if this moment that they would start their chrysalis transformation. Yes the youngest loved to use the word chrysalis. She enjoyed correcting anyone who would use the word cocoon . Between the 7th and 10th day the larvae each took their turn heading to the top to form their chrysalis. The wait started. Each day the girls checked on them just to make sure all was well. You could tell when the waited day was getting near as the chrysalis became more translucent and you could see the wings. On the 7th day we all kept peeking to see if anything was happening. Well they were a bit disappointed that at at the next check they had missed the first one to emerge. But have no fear while looking at the beautiful new butterfly and talking about how it was such a miracle that the larvae could go from being a caterpillar to a completely other animal we all witnessed the next one to creep out . The girls were totally thrilled and barley left the container for the whole day. That first day 7 of the twelve emerged. The next day 4 and the next 2. While we didn't get to see all emerge (it happens quite quickly) They witnessed enough that they were satisfied. They waited patiently to make sure that the new butterflies found the sugar nectar and filled their bellies. They decided that the day after all the butterflies has emerged they were going to set them free. The morning of the release the girls took them into the yard opened the container and waited. It didn't take long for the first one to find it's way out and flutter away to it's new found freedom. It took approximately an hour for all the butterflies to take off. When taking their first flight some flew quite aways. Others lingered close by for a bit letting the girls get their last looks. As they waited the girls discussed what their free life would be like. This was a awesome project for all of us and we have already made plans to do it again next summer A+++. The girls only expressed one thing they didn't like and that was that the butterflies all looked alike and they were unable to give them names as they couldn't tell them apart. Haha. Thank You! Looking forward to next time!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun science lesson! I ordered the butterfly larvae after my kids received a butterfly kit as a gift. The ordering process was easy, we received our larvae promptly, and we now have 5 beautiful butterflies! My kids (ages 3 & 6) have really enjoyed watching the process as the larvae grow, create their cocoons and emerge. I would highly recommend this product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from They all hatched! We got the larvae and followed the easy instructions. We ended up with all our butterlies hatching. The kids loved watching the whole process. We let our butterflies go after a couple of hours after they hatched, that was fun to watch them fly off.
