Grades 912. Using this inquiry-based kit, students create an enclosed aquatic ecosystem that allows them to observe biogeochemical and life cycles. Students observe this ecosystem, known as a microcosm, and identify ecological relationships. They are then challenged to find the answer to a fundamental question: "What factors can determine whether an ecosystem will succeed or fail?" The activity requires approximately 4 weeks to complete. Enough materials are provided to accommodate 32 students working in groups of 4. Note: Kit includes vouchers for 2 sets of living organisms that are shipped separately. Set 1 includes Daphnia pulex, Lumbriculus, and algae for a food source. Set 2 includes pond snails, Chara, and dwarf aquarium frogs. Allow approximately 12 days between the requested arrival dates for these 2 sets.
