Tropospheric Ozone Testing

Grades 9–12. Investigate a real-world environmental issue when your students perform an experiment to test for elevated levels of ozone. This kit allows them to develop an understanding of the causes of this type of environmental pollution along with the troposphere and how ozone affects it. While students conduct this hands-on investigation, they observe an example of how we can impact our environment. They conduct reaction testing using ozone test paper to determine the ground level of ozone in different areas around the school. Using this information, they create a map of the testing sites and formulate a hypothesis to explain the results. They learn ways in which elevated levels of ozone can be harmful to living tissues. Kit accommodates a class of up to 32 students working in pairs. The activities can be completed over 2 days, with an 8-hr reaction period required after setting up the test papers.
