Carolina ChemKits®: Molar Volume of a Gas

This product is not available online. Call 800.334.5551

Learn about gas laws through hands-on experimentation

  • React magnesium metal with hydrochloric acid to generate hydrogen gas
  • Use collected data to calculate the molar volume of any gas
  • Gain practice with dimensional analysis

Students react excess hydrochloric acid with a known mass of magnesium metal, collect the resultant hydrogen gas, and use Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures and the combined gas law to calculate an experimental molar volume. This elegant procedure allows students to repeat the procedure 3 times during a class period to collect more data points and arrive at a more precise value. The activity requires approximately 45 minutes of class time. Kit materials are sufficient for 30 students working in groups of 3 and include free 1-year access to digital resources that support 3-dimensional instruction for NGSS.
