They learn the chemical properties of the 20 amino acid side chains using dynamic side chain models. These models still feature dual-coloring schemes—a colored band at the base indicates chemical properties—but new embedded plastic balls show atomic structure. Since understanding the structural and chemical properties of the amino acid side chains is essential to grasping the basics of protein structure, working with the side chain models helps students comprehend protein structure. It is so helpful for giving students a visual and conceptual understanding of what the R groups look like, what properties they have (hydrophobic vs hydrophilic vs acidic vs basic), how nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur affect the properties of the R groups, and how they attract or repel each other to cause a protein to take shape. My students were able to complete this in a 45-minute period with little help but tons of learning. And by the way, this product is definitely re-usable :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Useful but a bit expensive for the materials. We use this for Science Olympiad and its ok, but very costly for a few pieces of styrofoam noodle. I wish it was a better quality since it is often not reusable and with a limited budget one kit is costly. It does accomplish the task it sets out to do though.
