I love the grids that are pre printed on the cards, as it makes it quite easy to make quantitative measurements using either a dissecting scope or scanning power on a compound microscope. Much better than petri dishes smeared with petroleum jelly.

This kit, once set up, is a clever way to demonstrate the stages of sewage treatment by using glucose as a substitute for organic waste and yeast as a substitute for aerobic, decomposing bacteria. You can have the students pour various things into your glucose-rich sewer water (such as cooking oil to represent crude oil, broken up leaves & soil) to represent other substances that may wash into a sewer system. The first stage of the apparatus removes the large debris, and the second part has the yeast which gradually break down the glucose over a relatively short period of time. The students measure and plot the declining glucose levels over 30 minutes.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wastewater Treatment I like this setup for the lab. I have two, one was won at an AP training and the other came in the AP lab bundle. I wish I had enough setups for every group I have, but they are too expensive for that. The first one took me a bit longer to put together, but the 2nd one went together like a breeze once I knew how to do it. If you don't follow the directions with the yeast it may not work right. Sometimes the test strips didn't seem very accurate, or maybe it was just my students messing it up. There is time during the process you will have to fill. Overall my kids enjoyed the lab and I feel did get the concept of how we treat wastewater, however if you can visit a wastewater facility that would be great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use Very easy to use. I was able to focus on designing the experiment with students instead of preparing our own collectors. I would have liked some ideas on how to place the collectors in outdoor locations. We ended up taping them to the bottom of a metal pan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leak detector We use these ozone test strips to find ozone leaks at tubing connections. This allows us to zero-in on a small leak without risking someone putting their nose to the connection to smell for an ozone leak. You can quickly ruin your entire day by getting a strong whiff of ozone up your nose. You simply hold the test strips near tubing connections and if there is a leak, the strip will immediately change colors. It is a safe, simple way to locate a pesky ozone leak. It is very difficult to locate an ozone leak in a room where the smell of ozone permeates the entire room. If you have multiple connections where leaks are possible, this is a safe and easy way to quickly find them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great demo but a few glitches in instructions This kit is a great demo of the wastewater treatment process. It could replace a field trip, but I used it after a trip to reinforce the processes. A couple of changes I made to the set up are: 1) I increased the amount of glucose, since the test paper has high readings on it, so I started with about 3000 mg/dL for my glucose concentration. 2) I do not use oil for the wastewater, as that is very hard to clean up afterwards. The kit could be improved with test papers that give more accurate readings in the 100-500 mg/dL range. You could most likely set up this kit as a series of beakers and decant material from one beaker to the next.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Customer support is poor My county just bought this for my AP Environmental Science class and I misplaced the teacher and student guides in the month since it arrived. i called to see if I could get replacement instructions and was told that I can not even find out if they can send them to me until I either get the account number from the county or the order number from my packing slip. So right now I have a kit that I can figure out some things to do with it but not with any help from the supplier.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from fun and educational The wastewater treatment kit is extremely fun and really drives home the point. The first time I used it, I was surprised to see how interested students were in how their water was treated. The kit serves as a great introduction to the chapter on water treatment. It is appropriate for all levels of environmental science.
