Natural Selection with Drosophila Kit (with voucher)

Use evidence gathered from observations of a fruit fly population over time to argue the occurrence of natural selection.

PE: HS-LS4-2
Related PE: HS-LS3-3
Time Requirement: 3 45-minute Class Periods

SEP: Analyzing and Interpreting Data
CCC: Patterns
DCI: LS4.B: Natural Selection

Bringing a realistic model of natural selection and evolution into your classroom has never been easier. Using the model organism Drosophila melanogaster, students introduce a single advantageous "mutation" (red eyes) into a population of white-eyed "ancestral" strain flies. They then observe and calculate the new trait's spread and the shift in population phenotypes over generations. The fitness advantage offered by the "mutation" classically exhibits evolution by natural selection—and your students can see it happen right in the classroom. This kit is designed for 32 students working cooperatively in 8 groups of 4. It includes digital resources to support 3-dimensional instruction for NGSS and a voucher to request the perishable materials later at your convenience. Contact us or return the voucher to request delivery of perishable materials.

Note: Keep Drosophila cultures at room temperature; do not refrigerate. Please order at least 2 weeks in advance of desired ship date.
