This technically simple experiment simulates the use of DNA in forensic investigations. Students cast agarose gels, load predigested DNA, and perform electrophoresis. They use the banding patterns of the DNA in the gel to compare the DNA fingerprints of 2 suspects with evidence and victim DNA.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great educational and fun project! The electrophoresis and forensics kit was a great way to help the kids through the DNA project. It was fun and educational. The students had a great time getting to do things for themselves and were especially excited when it came to checking their gel to see "who did it!" It was also very easy to use, but make sure you watch the Pat video.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth the time and money I used this kit to help me become comfortable with DNA electrophoresis as a classroom lab activity. I was not ready to make a big purchase of the expensive equipment so this was perfect for me and my students. I have used this with advanced students and low-achieving students. They all enjoyed the level of skill required to make it work successfully because it was not too easy or too hard. Since the initial purchase I have now been able to include more advanced equipment but I still use this kit for simple back-up projects.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 1/8 success rate The student groups were unable to visualize the DNA. Though they are novices, it is unbelievable that so many of the groups would have no results. They loaded lanes of loading buffer, and those appeared - just no bands of DNA. Though it teaches that science involves a lot of troubleshooting, it is not optimal for a one-shot experiment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good making/running gel practice This product is great for practicing agarose gel-making and loaded. It's nice because they include a blue stain, so theres no need for EtBr. I gave it 4 stars for the price because you can use dyed water and your own gel box (if you have one), if you goal is just to have students practice gel loading. However, it does include a good real life scenario, which is helpful for engaging the students and can help in understanding the big picture.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This lab has a definite "hook" for students. We used 5 9-volt batteries, ran the gel for 55min, and got excellent results. On end-of-unit surveys, students often remark that this was their favorite lab because they felt that they were "doing stuff real scientists do". Students are always engaged in this lab and love to compare to see which group got the best results.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Forensics DNA Kit I Use Again and Again I have used this kit a number of times over the years and enjoy working it with my students. The students like the forensics aspect of this lab; it easily ties in with their CSI interests. Setup is easy for the teacher especially if you watch the instruction video that comes along with the kit or that can be purchased separately. We can do this lab in two 45 minute lab periods. The DNA patterns on the gel can easily be read by the students without any expensive equipment; just a light source is basically all you need. You may need to experiment with gel run times to see how long the run actually takes. I found 5 batteries effective for each run.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly Recommended Very effective learning tool, but it does take a bit of prep time on the instructor's part. Practice using the materials several times in advance and it'll be fine. I recommend purchasing the power supply pack over using 9V batteries, and using a centrifuge to prepare DNA samples before each use. It helps to prep most of it in advance and just have the students load the DNA. I consistently receive positive feedback from the students after they've completed this activity. It's one of their favorite labs!
