Mosquito Fish

Introduce your students to a variety of biological topics by studying mosquito fish. These freshwater fish are native to the US and make fascinating subjects. Bring them into your classroom, and you can teach valuable lessons on biology, ecology, and environmental science. In this guide, we will go over the basics of this fish so you can create an unforgettable lesson plan.

What are Mosquito Fish?

Mosquito fish (genus Gambusia) are a common type of freshwater fish. They are a relatively small fish species, with females growing to approximately 7 inches long and males growing to 4 inches long. Mosquito fish earned their name due to the fact that they consume mosquitos. Because of this, mosquito fish have been introduced into a variety of habitats to try to control mosquito populations. This is important when an area experiences an outbreak of a mosquito-borne disease, and older students will enjoy studying the public health and environmental results of this.

Mosquito Fish Diet and Habitat

While mosquito fish are known for consuming mosquito larvae, they actually have a varied diet that can include zooplankton, mites, beetles, mayflies, and other small invertebrates. In fact, the health of this fish depends on it eating a variety of things. However, when adult females introduced to areas with a large mosquito population, they are able to eat hundreds of larvae in a single day. These fish are native to states on the Mississippi River, but they are able to survive in a wide variety of water conditions and temperatures, making them useful for controlling mosquito populations all over the world.

Freshwater Fish in the Classroom

Raising freshwater fish in the classroom (including mosquito fish) requires specific care. Although mosquito fish are resilient and can survive in many conditions, properly setting up their environment will keep your fish as healthy as possible. Be sure to set up a holding pail filled with conditioned tap water before you receive your fish. Properly acclimating your fish to their aquarium’s water is the only way to keep your fish safe. Set up your classroom’s mosquito fish aquarium several weeks before your fish arrive to ensure proper biological filtration has been established. Consult this care sheet for tips on setting up your classroom’s habitat

Mosquito Fish Care

The above care sheet also has plenty of information on raising your fish. Be sure to keep your aquarium at a steady temperature away from direct sunlight. Temperature shock can be deadly to fish. It’s also important to give the fish time to acclimate to their new environment before you feed them. Be careful not to overfeed your fish as uneaten food can quickly develop bacteria. Healthy fish will be active and interesting to observe.
