Grades 6–8. For a class of 30. In this cross-curricular caper, your students must figure out who took their warm chewy cookies. They investigate a ransom note written in Spanish, cut from several different local newspapers, that appears to have some sort of red stain on it. They analyze some white powder and soil near the note. Finally, they determine whose DNA is on the envelope the note was found in. There is also information on how to stage a trial for the culprit.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lesson plan not as expected I was surprised to receive the lesson plan and find the main component of the crime was based on doing a fundraiser at your school with Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Company. The lesson plan and supporting materials were all about throwing a cookie dough selling fundraiser at your school and then the cookie dough goes missing. The lesson mentioned if you didn't want to do the fundraiser you could just pretend it was a case you read in the media. Unfortunately, in order to engage students of this age the material needs to be something they can relate to and a distant connection is not going to work. It would have taken me hours to re-write the material to a more general scenario the kids could relate to. After spending almost $200 on an all included lesson I didn't have time to spend hours revising. Would have loved to use the product but wasn't properly advertised on website. I spoke to Customer Service at Carolina and they had no idea about the Spunkmeyer fundraiser part. Better luck next time.
