The Mystery of Lyle and Louise: Forensic Entomology Kit

$285.00
(ships from manufacturer, est arrival 11/1/23)

Description

Grade 9–College. The bodies discovered in the cabin crime scene are unrecognizable and decomposing, with large masses of maggots present. Students learn how forensic entomologists use maggots to determine post mortem interval (PMI).

Examining life-stage exemplars of 2 fly species, each student develops a personal key for distinguishing between life stage and species. Using the personal key, the student identifies insects collected from the corpses and records that information for use by the entire class. Finally, by comparing the identification data to a life-stage/species-development chart and using National Weather Service data, students determine the post mortem interval for both decedents. The reusable kit includes supplies for up to 30 students working in 6 groups and is matched to National Science Education Standards. Fully illustrated teacher's manual provides technique background. Note: Kit can be shipped and stored at room temperature.
