Rated 2 out of 5 by from Quality of product has diminished I coordinate the science supplies for 12 middle schools and 32 elementary schools in my district; in total about 19,000 students for those nine grade levels. In addition, I am a Zoology graduate, and well-versed in microscope use. In the past couple of years, I have received complaints from my teachers that this product is not what it once was. To wit: " The mixed protozoa over the years have lost their variety. That jar used to be teaming with volvox, stentors, vorticella, and other types, but the last few years it doesn't seem to be as healthy. I keep hoping that it will be back to the old standard." Also, " There were many years (probably 8-10) where the mixed protozoa was really thriving. The volvox are awesome when they are alive. They are bright green (almost florescent) and roll like balls. The last two years there have been dark green/browning ones that don't move at all or pieces of them floating in the water. Then there has only been paramecium and euglenas [in the Mixed Flagellates sample] which are really redundant. Last year I don't think I even showed the students drops from that container." Other complaints are that there are not enough organisms in each sample jar for 4 classes (info from the company says enough for a full complement of classes--I read that as 5-6 class periods). When I have to double up for a teacher to feel satisfied with the volume of specimens, this product becomes very expensive. We are lucky to work in a university town with a friendly and approachable faculty. Their Bacteriology faculty and staff have worked with our teachers to ensure that their skills are well honed, but it is apparent from my perspective that this is not really the issue. This item is meant to meet the requirements for the FOSS Diversity of Life unit, but seems substandard or barely adequate at best, especially for the price.
