Learn about gas laws through hands-on experimentation

Students react excess hydrochloric acid with a known mass of magnesium metal, collect the resultant hydrogen gas, and use Dalton's law of partial pressures and the combined gas law to calculate an experimental molar volume. This elegant procedure allows students to repeat the procedure 3 times during a class period to collect more data points and arrive at a more precise value. The activity requires approximately 45 minutes of class time. Value Kit includes materials for 4 classes of 30 students, each class working in groups of 3, plus free 1-year access to digital resources that support 3-dimensional instruction for NGSS.
