Biology: Concepts & Practices™ is a comprehensive, standards-based introductory high school biology curriculum. Students develop scientific literacy, practice 21st-century problem-solving skills, and understand disciplinary core ideas mandated by state and national standards. The curriculum consists of 22 modular "Learning Experiences" offering a full year of biology instruction, integrating STEM and Common Core ELA support. With Concepts and Practices™ capture and sustain student interest with relevant, real-life case studies taken from the headlines and support a variety of instructional strategies to accommodate different learning styles.

Originally conceived as part of the Foundation Science series, Biology: Concepts & Practices™ supports the performance expectations of the Next Generation Science Standards as well as gives students insight into how the content prepares them for life in the 21st century. These unifying ideas thread throughout Biology: Concepts & Practices™:

  • Life is very complex and very diverse and yet the underlying similarities are striking. By studying both the similarities and differences, understandings can be achieved about the origins of life, the development of diversity, and how organisms do (or do not) coexist on Earth.
  • Information transfers over space and time. Information transfers vertically in heredity and evolution and horizontally within and between cells. It can occur in nanoseconds during gene expression, within seconds or minutes within organisms, over generations in heredity, and over eons in evolution. It is the ability to use and combine information that gives rise to diversity.
  • Understanding of fundamental concepts in science can facilitate the design of new technologies and products that improve the quality of life.
