In this guided-inquiry activity, students plant and score Wisconsin Fast Plants® to explore genetic inheritance. They study dominant and recessive traits and observe the results of monohybrid crosses. Students then are challenged to design an experiment and perform a dihybrid cross to determine which version of 2 traits is dominant. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in groups of 3.

In this guided-inquiry activity, introduce students to genetic inheritance using Wisconsin Fast Plants®. Students first plant and score Wisconsin Fast Plants® to examine phenotypes of the parental generation and 2 generations of offspring. They then explain their findings to understand concepts of dominant and recessive traits and inheritance of phenotypes. Students next design and conduct an experiment and perform dihybrid crosses to determine which leaf color and stem color are the dominant and recessive forms. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in groups of 3.

In addition, the Inquiries in Science® content and activities reflect the science practices and engineering practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts outlined by the National Research Council's A Framework for K–12 Science Education (2011) and the Next Generation Science Standards (2013).
