Lysozyme, a constituent of human cells and many body fluids, is a part of the body's natural resistance mechanism. As its name suggests, lysozyme lyses bacterial cell walls.
Students compare the lytic effect of lysozyme from collected tears, saliva, sweat, fingernails, etc. on Micrococcus lysodeikticus, a common skin bacterium. Requires 1 day from setup to completion. A chicken egg white (positive control) is required but not supplied.
