Grades 612. Not all technology plugs into the wall. Design teams must get creative to get loud as they transform cardboard tubes and items commonly found at home or school into a nonelectrical device to amplify smartphone sound. Engage and excite students as they explore how sound waves are transmitted, reflected, and amplified by different shapes and materials. Teams modify designs and then compete to produce the best device to increase the volume and clarity of music or tones. Addresses Next Generation Science Standards®: MS-PS4-2, HS-PS4-1. Materials support 15 design teams. Needed per team but not supplied: sound meter or tone generator, smartphone, and metric ruler or measuring tape. Smart device apps may be used for music and tones. Includes teacher's manual, student guide, and FREE 1-year access to digital resources that support three-dimensional instruction.
