Grade 9–College. The exercises in this kit allow students to investigate fundamental principles of digestion, osmosis, and diffusion. Students test the osmotic rates of urea, sucrose, and glucose solutions in the presence or absence of urease and invertase. Then they use m-cresol purple pH indicator to test for the presence of ammonia, an indication of hydrolysis of urea by urease. Different groups will test different solutions and then pool their data. For a class of up to 32 students working in pairs.

Grade 9–College. The 2 exercises in this kit allow students to investigate fundamental principles of digestion, osmosis, and diffusion.

In the 1st exercise, students test the osmotic rates of urea, sucrose, and glucose solutions in the presence or absence of urease and invertase. This determines how the presence of the enzymes affects the osmotic rates of the solutions.

In the 2nd exercise, they use m-cresol purple pH indicator to test for the presence of ammonia, an indication of hydrolysis of urea by urease. Different groups will test different solutions and then pool their data. For a class of up to 32 students working in pairs.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Missing chemicals, Poor Instructions First, it should be clear from catalog or website that this lab requires 4 hours of data collection. I can't imagine very many high school biology classes have 4 consecutive hours for data collection. The accompanying lab literature is also poor. The instructions could be MUCH better, aided by multiple illustrations of the steps needed for the assembly of the osmometer. All for $200!! Add to that, the replacement kit did not even come with the needed glucose solution. Very frustrating!
