Students construct a model of a kidney using a semipermeable membrane to filter a completely safe solution that simulates blood. The simulated blood solution contains simulated cells that cannot cross the semipermeable membrane and remain in the kidney model. The resulting filtrate resembles urine that students test for salt and other waste products. Students learn about the urinary system, urine formation, and kidney function.

  • Investigate the function of a human kidney by constructing a model
  • Understand the mechanism of urine formation in the kidney
  • Observe osmosis as it relates to kidney filtration
  • Relate kidney function to homeostasis

For a class of up to 40 students. The simulated blood cells can also be seen and counted under a microscope - just like real blood! Students learn about the urinary system, urine formation, and kidney function.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just ok This kit is easy to use and visually striking. However, it is set up as a "cook book" lab, rather than an inquiry lab. The procedure is quite simple. All in all, it was ok, but it didn't really meet my teaching goals since it didn't push students to think critically and it also didn't get into the more detailed functions of the kidney, just the very basic filtration function. I'll try a different kit next time. In contrast to what another reviewer said, the manufactured red blood cells are clearly visible with regular, student-grade microscopes. They can be a little tricky to focus on. If you're having trouble, I recommend putting a hair or piece of lint on the slide. You can then focus on the hair, which will help you find the manufactured red blood cells.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Product but a few suggestions to improve I purchased this product for my anatomy class. The lab was very easy to use and my students enjoyed the lab. There are only a few suggestions that I would make to improve this product. The kit encluded just enough material for the recommended number of students. If any students had defective equipment or made a mistake I had to find my own material. Some extra material if this occurs would be helpful. Also if you do not have a high powered microscope there is no point to looking for red blood cells. Standard high school microscopes will not show these at all. I just removed this part from the lab.
