Your class might have trouble believing it, but this ferocious-looking creature is actually quite shy. When disturbed, it hisses loudly by forcefully expelling air through its spiracles. Once it becomes accustomed to being handled, it no longer hisses. However, if you leave it alone for a few weeks, it begins to hiss again. Adult.

Your class might have trouble believing it, but this ferocious-looking creature is actually quite shy—they can even be handled. This insect is originally from the island of Madagascar. When disturbed, it hisses loudly by forcefully expelling air through its spiracles. Its large carapace has false eyespot protrusions that give the roach its fierce appearance. Once it becomes accustomed to being handled, it no longer hisses. However, if you leave it alone for a few weeks, it begins to hiss again. Adult.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good hissers, bad mites. I've gotten a total of five hissers over the past year. The last three (separately ordered and shipped by weeks) have all had issues with mites. I have my two males in one habitat and two females in a different habitat (my fifth died after not even a year and when was lethargic, wobbly, and not himself, emails suggested old age, but he was still growing and had grown massively since I'd gotten him). I've cleaned them and dumped their habitats only to find I can still see mites on them. I will be "flouring" them again today and hopefully this will resolve the issue. I understand mites can occur on them and what to do if they do, but it would be nice if they weren't shipped with them. Besides that, I love my hissers.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Missing Legs The specimen that I ordered (Madagascar Hissing Cockroach) was missing the tibias of two of it's legs. It can still move about but it's a bummer that we received a classroom pet that faces challenges in life when it comes to movement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hissing Cockroaches make great pets! I have kept and bred this species (Gromphadorhina portentosa) of cockroach, they make great pets! First, with proper care can live up to 5 years! They produce a hissing sound through holes on their abdomen. They are gentle and clean animals and do not bite, they are NOT a pest species, if they escape in your house they will die from lack of moisture. If breeding them, rarely you might come across a pure black individual, this is a recessive trait and really are stunning looking! These roaches can climb glass and plastic cages, make sure to keep the cover on! Care: Hissing cockroaches eat: apples, bananas, oranges, mango, romaine lettuce, fresh spinach leaves, dog and cat kibble, white bread, various baby food flavors like (banana,beef,apple,mango,orange/banana). In the wild they eat decomposing leaves and bark too, you can feed decaying Oak leaves (brown) and oak/birch tree bark that is rotting, they need this with the foods listed above. They also need a gentle misting of water daily to drink and it helps with humidity that aids in proper skin shedding. They eat when its dark. Housing: I use a covered, 20 gallon glass tank. Repti bark wood chips as substrate, with wood branches/logs as hiding/climbing decor bought from pet store in reptile section. Females give live birth to babies, males will fight for territory so if your keeping more than one male, have a big setup with space! If given the choice, if you dont want them breeding, only buy males. Adult females will be pregnant, and are pregnant for life, 5 years is a lot of baby roaches!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from arrived live and well! My roaches are personal pets, so I don't really have any educational needs to meet, but I do like that you include the booklet that gives me some info about them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from More than I bargained for This is our third roach purchase from Carolina, but the first time we got females! We opened our box, expecting to find three adults, and found 40+ hatchlings! Once we got them in a tight-lidded box ( salad greens box with tiny holes drilled in the lid), they were no trouble at all. We put the adult male in another box, and the females in a third, and no more babies so far! They are so low maintenance - just keep their food and water fresh and put the lid back on tight. My kids love to let the adults play on their hands. We have one hatchling from last year, and he is still immature, so I figure we have time before we need to start sexing and separating our new babies. This is a new adventure for sure!
