In this Science Buddies science project, you will observe the effects of short-term ultraviolet light exposure on bacteria. You can customize this experiment to include the nutrient agar plates, living K-12 E. coli, a glass spreader, and other supplies.

Ultraviolet light can damage DNA molecules. If a cell's DNA repair mechanisms can't keep up with the damage, mutations are the result. As harmful mutations accumulate, the cell eventually dies. How much ultraviolet light is too much for a bacterial cell?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Grew very well I got the vial in good shape, left it overnight, and was able to get really great growth. Just using a cotton swab produced fairly small colonies but using an innoculating hook spread out the bacteria and I was able to get almost full coverage. I’d definitely recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great results ! We used this for a middle school experiment . It was very easy to use and without any mess. It would have been nice to include clear instructions for storage of the product - we refrigerated it briefly by mistake but it still worked out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for science fair Ordered these for son's 8th grade science fair project. Arrived exactly at time promised. Stored in refrigerator until ready to use. Plate inoculation was easy. Incubated in basement. Grew beautiful (actually disgusting!) specimens in a few days. Son was amazed and fascinated. Science fair conquered!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use and perfect for student micro projects Trying to teach students the proper method for making agar dishes can be difficult. At times when they make their own the agar is lumpy and uneven, making it difficult to observe. The only suggestion I would make is order more than you need because the plastic on the dishes is fairly thin and on every purchase I have made, typically at least one dish is cracked and cannot be used. Other than that these are so much easier than preparing your own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Strain of E.coli that grows Bought this product for a very important research paper for my school and everything went smoothy. Received the product in good packaging and nothing was leaking. The bacteria grew successfully and I did not encounter any problems with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Practical but some plates were damaged. I used these plates for my after school program. They worked very well. Just a couple of things to keep in mind if you are considering buying it. 1) the only option of shipping is 2-day, so that will add up to your total. 2) out of the 3 packs I used, 3 plates were unusable: one had a crack, one had some unidentified object in the agar, and one was contaminated. However, overall is a good product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good and Reliable Product Very good product. I have ordered this product multiple times for my research and it has never let me down. Also is shipped very quickly with safe and secure packaging. 10/10 would inoculate again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I AM OUTRAGED! I ordered this product and many others for my science fair project. I spent over 120$ which has been flushed completely down the drain because the bacteria did not grow. I used the bacteria the same day that it arrived at y doorstep so there is no way that it went bad. I have retried the experiment several times and the bacterial has still failed to grow. My project is due in a few weeks and it is too late to change my topic so i will receive a failing grade. I am HIGHLY DISSATISFIED with this product AND company.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bacteria were not viable We wasted a lot of time trying to make these bacteria grow. We considered all other factors before we had to admit the bacteria we received was not going to work. This is our only experience with this company or this product. Carolina agreed to a refund.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Never grew I used the culture according to all of the specifications and directions the day the culture and agar plates arrived. The bacteria never grew. Now I am extremely stressed since this is for a major grade in science.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Agar plates used in Elementary class Only one of my 120 plates showed contamination. The plates are wrapped in small stacks of ten and double boxed for shipping. No breakage in my order. They are easy to use and store. I appreciate that shipping charges are stated upfront. Several other suppliers offer lower rates per plate cost but ridiculously expensive shipping. I trust Carolina to deliver on time and they did. Used for 5th grade handing washing experiment, Q1 positive control- dirty thumb, Q2 thumb washed with water, Q3 thumb washed with soap & water, Q4 negative control - no treatment. Fabulous results!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use and store The gloves come in a small box which is great for storing large amounts between use but several students have had gloved rip during use which is problematic. However, I'm not sure if the fault lies with the gloved or with the students.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect, convenient, supports lush bacterial growth The plates arrived very quickly. Of 20 plates, one had visible contamination. I contacted the company and a replacement sleeve was shipped immediately at no cost over a holiday! (Fantastic customer service). The plates supported lush, rapid growth of e-coli for a science fair experiment. They were uniformly poured and made the experiment tidy and quick.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from arrived, packaged well I was so anxious to teach again in My school Nursing job, the minute I heard a teacher that was teaching micro, I arranged to pair up and look for dirty things to swab. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed by how delivered. Overall the product worked, however two of the plates were cracked. Packaging could have been better. I also am disappointed that I paid so much to ship it, had to leave work early so I was home when it arrived so I could get it in the frig, and when I opened it there were no ice packs in the box. More should have been done to keep them cold. Especially when I paid so much to ship it and was told ice should be in it. One set of the agar plates did not work as well as the second set. Could this be because of how it was shipped?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I am using these plates for inducing fungal pigmentation Having an imprint of the plate/media specification- which is your hew addition- is not helping me . HTe imprint on the bottom of the plate is obscuring the pigment formation. Technical data about the culture medium is very helpful, however should be supplied separately. More specifications regarding the medium would be helpful- pH and percentage of elements in it.
