In this Science Buddies project, you'll use a live specimen to investigate how a specific freshwater organism, Daphnia magna, responds to the exposure to different concentrations of nanosilver. You can customize your materials to include the live samples, magnifier, pond water, and other supplies needed to complete this experiment.

Do you know why enzymes are oftentimes called the workhorses of biochemistry? It's because they can speed up a wide variety of chemical reactions, and chemists and biologists use enzymes to do all kinds of jobs. In this project, pectinase, an enzyme frequently used in the food industry, will be used to extract juice from apples.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great product, half dead I got this product today for a science fair project and was surprised to find many/most of them dead. I am now hoping the females produce enough for my experiment

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lifeless Pond Water Unfortunately, the cultures we carefully prepared turned out to be lifeless. There are multiple factors that could have led to these results, but I can't help but wonder if it was the pond water.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Expectations vs Reality The ordering and shipment process were expeditious and concise. I received a generally "live" shipment of daphnia... though there were about as many dead organisms as there were live. I am not sure if it was "just their time" or a harvesting issue that caused the casualties. The ones that did survive were used to start a colony, of which none of the magna survived longer than 48 hrs. The smaller species did proliferate after a period of stagnation and have been going strong since. Overall, I did find that the organisms were "sound" and of good constitution.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Daphnia are great against pond algae Water is crystal clear, unlike the years when we skipped the daphnia. Unfortunately fish love them so much you can't really keep them in a pond with fish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So healthy! I bought the culture about two months ago and had to breed them to use for an experiment. They were so healthy I had a tank full in a matter of days. Will definitely order from again in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Daphnia Magna My son's science experiment left a jar full of daphnia magna survivors which we did not have the heart to kill, so we started feeding them yeast and they are thriving... The pond water we ordered seems perfect for them.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I recieved a culture and most of the culture turned into cyclops....i feed them algae, yeast, and grain....the whole culture pretty much died as cyclops took over i don't know if they out competed or if they ate the daphnia babies

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Daphnia Cultures Living. We were purchasing the cultures for past few years for studying effects of various agents on Daphina heart rate. The cultures were shipped on time and arrived in satisfactory condition. Once there was an issue with the shipment and when we communicated to the customer service, they were courteous and very prompt in rectifying it. We were shipped us a replacement free of charge. We were very happy about the service provided to us.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great customer service My daughter needed live Daphnia magna for her science fair project. While she knew what she needed to do to conduct the experiment, we were at a loss as to the Daphnia themselves. I called Carolina Biological Supply numerous times and each time received the assistance I needed. Steve in live organisms was particularly helpful, as we did not know exactly which type of Daphnia to use, or if we needed to purchase Daphnia food or other accessories. I left him several detailed messages, and each time he called me back promptly. One time was later in the day, and he provided me with alternate contact information in case we did not have the answers we needed by the end of business hours that day. The Daphnia arrived on time and in great condition (I live in northern VA, and it gets cold here in early Dec, but we had no issues with temperature affecting the organisms). They actually lasted MUCH longer than expected. (So much so that when her experiment was over, my daughter insisted on keeping the containers with live Daphnia until no more were left. We did not intentionally set up a culture, but it is a month later and we still have a few survivors which is bad for counter space, but good for curious young minds!) I would 100% recommend Carolina Biological Supply, and will definitely use them for any future needs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for Experiments! I purchased this about a month ago for a science fair experiment. When they arrived, most of them were swimming around and I could start the experiment within a day. The culture had both big and small Daphnias. They were shipped with care and they also gave with the Daphnia culture, 3 plastic watering pipettes. Its a great company and their live products are great too!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Entire daphnia shipment dead in a few days I know shipping any live animals is difficult process at best and the company did wait to ship these to make sure it arrived on a weekday, but what I received could have been better. If I included the daphnia that I'm assuming were born during shipping, I had 30+ daphnia. Counting just the adults, including dead ones, would probably just meet the minimum 30. I divided the order into two containers to test the food I purchased from the company versus activated yeast and to compensate for the potential of colony collapse. These containers were nano aquariums with simple air bubblers (large bubbles) to agitate the water. The next day, about half my daphnia order was dead across both containers. A few days after that, all the daphnia that I was feeding the recommended food were dead. The group being fed yeast lasted long enough to propagate enough to keep a small colony going. Including shipping, these daphnia cost about $1 per organism if you get around 30 adults like I did. This is costly for such a small crustacean given how many daphnia breeders are out there selling more for less. I went with this company hoping that the cost would ensure quality control and a superior product. I'm sad to say this was not the outcome.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Measurement starts at 25ml??? I wish that I had looked closely at the picture before purchase. The measurements start at 25 ml and not at 0 ml. This is purchase was unfortunate because I may need to collect data below 25 ml. I called customer service and they had to speak with a product manager to ask about cylinders that could start at 0. She was told that there are none.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from never disappointed The daphnia always come to me very feisty and practically all of them are alive. I can tell that Carolina Supply is very mindful of the needs of this organism.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Can I get help? The Daphina was of good use to my experiment but the package came with a another package with I have no idea what was in it, little brown things were in it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from ok Product arrived on time for the start of the experiment however the number of mature Daphnia were limited (we purchased 4 containers hoping to have a total of 120 Daphnia to use 3 in each of our containers). We ended up only using 30, selecting only the larger specimens from the jars to be consistent throughout the experiment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to work with and handle. We purchased the Daphnia magna for my son's science experiment. He was testing different chemicals on the heart rate of these animals. Not only did his experiment work, but the Daphnia were easy to work with. They arrived and with a few steps setup, we have a flourishing colony. They need little fussing over and even after testing remained alive. They were a bit pricey, but overall we had success with these animals.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Arrived alive and well We use this product to in water quality labs. Daphnia from Carolina typically arrives healthy with plenty of adults to live for over a week (7-10 days is our typical experience). Shipping on this product is generally outrageous, being at least half the cost of the product itself but this is the most cost effective way our small school has found currently to have Daphnia for our labs.
