Grades 6–10. Light can be applied in many ways to achieve varied results. Flashlights and televisions are obvious examples of how we can harness the power of light. Building on a preliminary understanding of the characteristics and behavior of light, Researching Optical Systems invites students to apply their existing knowledge about light to explore different optical systems, such as cameras, optical fibers, lenses, mirrors, and spectroscopes; how they are designed; and how they work.

Grades 6–10. Light can be applied in many ways to achieve varied results. Flashlights and televisions are obvious examples of how we can harness the power of light. But what about adjusting our vision, experiencing optical illusions, or sending information? Can light be applied to situations like these? Building on a preliminary understanding of the characteristics and behavior of light, Researching Optical Systems invites students to apply their existing knowledge about light to explore different optical systems, such as cameras, optical fibers, lenses, mirrors, and spectroscopes; how they are designed; and how they work.

  • Supports STEM and Common Core initiatives as students work to develop 21st-century skills in science, math, technology, and engineering to prepare for careers in the global marketplace.
  • Fosters a positive attitude toward science

STC-Secondary™ is a 16-unit, inquiry-centered middle school science curriculum developed by the Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC). Each STC-Secondary™ unit provides opportunities for students to experience scientific phenomena firsthand. A comprehensive, research-based curriculum, STC-Secondary™ is aligned with the National Science Education Standards.

Each lesson in Researching Optical Systems builds on skills and concepts presented in previous lessons. The unit begins with an assessment of students' current understanding of the topic and ends with performance-based and written assessments. As students progress through the module, they take greater responsibility for their own learning, eventually planning and conducting their own procedures, devising their own data tables, and analyzing the results they obtain.
