Reproduction and growth are biology topics addressed at a variety of grade levels, from early elementary science to Advanced Placement® Biology. Students of all ages can learn from observing the germination of seeds. In this demonstration, seeds germinate on black agar plates, which make the developmental stages easy to identify and observe. Wisconsin Fast Plants® seed (Brassica rapa) typically germinates within 3 to 5 days. By using a Discovery Lens, students can get an up close view of the growth stage, from seed through leaf development. The activity supports 3-dimensional learning and builds toward the following:

  • NGSS Core Idea: Life Science 1: From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
