Grade 3 and up. This is a fun introduction to the world of insect pheromones. Termites use chemicals to mark their trails, but can they be fooled? Using worker termites and various ink pens, students test the reaction of termites to chemicals that mimic those of their natural pheromones. By placing the termites near the prepared trail lines, students observe scent preferences, the insects' agility in maneuvering sharp angles, and their ability to pick up the scent of a lost trail.

Available in a Classroom Kit with materials for up to 30 students working in pairs (contains about 100 termites) or a Demonstration Kit for individual student use (contains about 25 termites). Both kits include a teacher's manual with reproducible student guide. Note: Due to termites' natural life cycle, they are often fragile in early fall and may not ship well.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointment - twice I've bought the termites many times before in the fall - and they've always lived forever! The first order had no living termites when I opened it. Carolina was great in sending a second order - heavily temperature controlled - but, again, only one or two living termites when I opened it. By the next day, they were both dead. Not sure what happened this year

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Technical Assistance is very responsive Thank you Carolina for helping to overcome a problem with the shipping. The organisms you re-sent were fine and made it possible for me to carry out my instruction as planned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Students love exploring with termites! I have used this kit with students on four different occasions and it has always been a hit. The termites survived for several weeks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from speedy shipping termites do not survive well in shipping but there were enough to do the lab with my entire 10th grade class.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from the lab has great potential I thought the lab had great potential but was not overly impressed with the written portion of the lab.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this engaging experiment We held an orientation night to welcome and introduce the incoming freshmen to the high school. I bought this kit to introduce seventh and eighth grade students to the science practices. They had so much fun and did not realize they were doing science until I began asking questions. They were so engaged that even when the questions were challenging, they persevered because they wanted to know the answers too. So much fun. When surveyed, they all talked about this experiment as their favorite part of the experience. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from staff development; science notebooks I used this with a group of teachers to explore literacy in science and using double entry science notebooks. It was engaging, thought-provoking, and made for a great way to model inquiry with students.
