Designed to match traditional AP® Biology Lab 6. Open your students' eyes to the genetic basis of inheritance with this simple lab. Developed in cooperation with the DNA Learning Center, this kit clearly demonstrates the induced uptake of a jellyfish gene by E. coli. Students observe the phenotypic effect of adding the gene for GFP (green fluorescent protein). GFP is expressed on plain LB—no color development substrate or induction reagent is needed. Your students can easily view the "green" effects in normal classroom lighting. Colonies will fluoresce under UV light. The plasmid containing the GFP gene also contains an ampicillin resistance gene, so ampicillin can be used to select for transformants. Lab procedure is easy to follow. The 8-Station Kit includes enough materials for 8 teams of students. Includes perishable materials when kit is shipped.

The reagents and instructions are truly student-proof - there will be transformants so long as the students are truly careful. Transformation efficiencies are good and the students enjoy the fluorescent results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exciting lab for engaging students! This kit has everything you need to do bacterial transformation with a plasmid. I've tried a few plasmids with my AP Biology students, and this one consistently gives very clean results. It's also my students' favorite plasmid! One tip is to be conservative in heat-shocking the bacteria. The instructions say to use a 42 deg. water bath. I've had great results if the water bath was 40-41 but killed most of the bacteria if it was 43 (luckily a few survived, so I just incubated them twice as long and the students could still see that it worked). Make sure you have a UV light source (blacklight), which is not included. The bacteria fluoresce green when successfully transformed, and the students get very excited about their "glowy" bacteria. The transformed colonies will keep fluorescing for several days after transformation, so I was able to bring it to a school showcase a few days later--it made a great impression on prospective students!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent E.coli transformation I have ordered from you for over twenty years and this particular product has always worked for me. I purchase all three modules. In module one we transform the bacteria and the students enjoy seeing the results. With module two we grow the bacteria, isolate the GFP (along all the other hydrophobic proteins) and with module three we run the PAGE and see the resulting band, of the corresponding size. When I teach students about cells and microtubules, I explain how motor proteins move the "cargo" along the microtubules (molecules, vesicles, ER etc.) and by substituting those with the GFP, the movement can be detected. This way students not only learn how to insert DNA in bacteria, but they also learn how to grow large quantities of that protein and potentially use it for research purposes.
