Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's the water After my 3rd batch of this didn't do so well, I've figured out it's the water. I used distilled water (run through a brita filter too), but it still didn't last longer than 2 weeks. The instructions say to use spring water (not readily available in my grocery - found distilled, drinking, or a variety of bubbly). I think the spring water is the key. If I were to do it again (and won't, too expensive), I would use spring water (let it sit for 24 hours, just in case), then mix with the soil-water medium that is recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Product After ordering the Spirogyra on a Monday, I received it on Wednesday. My five Biology classes used it Thursday. There was more than enough in the culture for a large number of students to use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Surprisingly tricky... For his middle school science experiment, my son wanted to use algae. The first batch we ordered didn't last long (7 or 8 days). Our fault, we didn't get it into the medium right away. We ordered a second batch (and medium) and it is doing better. I've taken to regular aeration and hope it will last the 3 weeks he needs it to for his experiment. The literature that is available with any algae purchase is a little lacking for spirogyra specifically (using a medium is recommended, diluted with spring water, but does it mean the concentrated soil-water medium?). I feel like the first batch didn't do well as a result (not an inexpensive situation). Overall, it is good for the type of algae to be known.
