Description

The process of homeostasis is important for all life, as it allows organisms to maintain a relatively constant internal environment in response to the ever-changing external environment. This kit gives students a hands-on lesson in homeostasis as they observe and manipulate the stomata of Zebrina. An additional extension inquiry activity involving phenotypic plasticity gives students more experience examining nature where they live. Kit materials are sufficient for 30 students.

The process of homeostasis is important for all life, as it allows organisms to maintain a relatively constant internal environment in response to the ever-changing external environment. This kit provides students with a hands-on lesson in homeostasis as they observe and manipulate the stomata of Zebrina. Beyond exploring the effects that light and osmosis have on homeostasis, students also can perform an extension inquiry activity involving phenotypic plasticity, giving them more experience examining nature where they live.

The activities in this kit address the following Next Generation Science Standards®:

  • HS-LS1-3. Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that feedback mechanisms maintain homeostasis.
Kit materials are sufficient for 30 students working in groups of 3 and include 1-year access to digital resources: reproducible teacher's guide and student guide, digital answer sheets, editable assessment questions, and graphics that can be used in conjunction with whiteboard projectors.

Note: Kit includes a voucher to request perishable material later at your convenience. Contact us or return the voucher at least 2 weeks prior to requested delivery date to ensure prompt arrival of material.
