Ranging from Alaska to Mexico, though more prevalent in northern forested regions, the American black bear (Ursus americanus) can reach 6 ft in length and weigh over 300 lb. It is a skillful climber and can run at speeds up to 25 mph. The black bear's diet consists mostly of vegetable matter supplemented with insects, small animals, and the infrequent large mammal.
