Meets AP® Chemistry topic 22. Perform organic synthesis on a safe, inexpensive scale and teach the fundamentals of organic synthesis at the same time. Students synthesize an organic compound, purify it by recrystallization, and determine its melting point range to estimate purity.
Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in pairs. Materials needed, but not supplied, include filtration apparatus (vacuum or gravity) and melting point apparatus.
