Demonstrate 4 discrepant events to introduce or to review how molecular structure and intra- and intermolecular forces determine the physical and chemical properties of substances. Students observe and explain hydrogen bonding, polarity, thermal expansion, and surface tension in terms of particulate interactions. Data analysis and assessment questions help prepare students for the AP® Chemistry Exam. Materials are sufficient to perform the 4 demonstrations twice.

Introduce or review how molecular structure and intra- and intermolecular forces determine the physical and chemical properties of substances. Also suitable for general chemistry or freshman chemistry, this kit includes 4 demonstrations:

• The Lost Volume - Focuses on a solution that deviates from ideality in that the volume change upon mixing is not zero.
• Bending Water - A static electric charge is used to attract polar water molecules, causing a stream of water to bend.
• Ball and Ring - Thermal expansion is explored.
• Lycopodium Shield - Hydrophobic lycopodium forms a water-resistant shield around the presenter's hand, keeping it dry while submerged.
