This lab activity guides students in the design of their own experiment testing various pretreatments of grass to maximize glucose production that could ultimately be used for the production of ethanol fuel. Students first follow a guided activity to examine the effect of mechanical grinding on enzymatic digestion of cellulose. In an inquiry activity, each group tests its experimental variables, such as pH, heat pretreatment, or some combination of these, to optimize the digestion of cellulose into glucose.
The kit is designed for 1 group of 4 students. Digital teacher's manual, included FREE with kit purchase, is a 12-month eBook license to the Biomass to Biofuel: Grasses for Ethanol Production Teacher's Manual and Student Guide. Note: Kit ships with perishable materials included for immediate use.
