The ease with which pathogens can spread through a population is very relevant today as we cope with the AIDS epidemic. Using diluted acids and bases as body fluids, students participate in a classroom simulation of a spreading epidemic. Students then figure out who the original carrier was. The exercise can be completed in one class period.

Beginning - Easy to perform; requires little or no experience in microbiology. The Classroom Kit can be used for 4 separate classes of 30 each. The Demonstration Kit can be used by one class of 30. With teacher instructions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epidemic Simulation Kit Overall great kit with the exception of the class tray to hold all the results. This would only be better if it was designed for each student to be able to have a tray with his/her own results rather than a whole class tray. Also if the holes to deposit the specimens in were larger. Several of my 8th grade students missed the assigned area to put the fluids.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My classes enjoyed this simulation. My third, fourth, and fifth grade gifted classes completed this simulation. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experiment, especially tracing the the pathogen back to subject zero using the well plates. My students are fascinated by the science of epidemiology. This experiment was wonderful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Hands On Learning Experience This simulation activity is an excellent way to teach students about epidemiology and the spread of diseases. At the end of the activity students visually see how quickly a disease can spread within a population.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I used this for my college level Introduction to Epidemiology class and it was a big hit, the students loved it as did I. I can't wait to use it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Effective! I used this with a class of 18 middle schoolers with great success. They love the "idea" of spreading a fake disease and trying to figure out who started it. They can really see how fast an epidemic can spread, but also how it can be contained if only a subset of students share with one another. Great intro to microscopic life unit.
