Sample collection is easy—DNA is extracted from blood (e.g., ex-ovo blood draw). Result interpretation is clear: 1 lower band indicates the presence of 2 copies of the blue egg gene (O/O), 2 bands indicate the presence of only 1 copy of the blue egg gene (O/o), while the presence of only the upper band indicates the absence of the blue egg gene (o/o). Therefore, this test can determine whether a chicken is heterozygous or homozygous for the oocyan allele.
