Witnessing metamorphosis is an experience that students and children never forget! Six painted lady (Vanessa cardui) butterfly larvae are shipped in three 1-oz rearing chambers (2 larvae per chamber) with food. The larvae pupate and emerge as adult butterflies in about 30 days.

After the adults emerge, try breeding them. All you need is the proper host plant for the adults to lay eggs on. The mallow plant (item #144042) is the painted lady's natural host. Once your new generation of caterpillars hatches, they will be hungry, and the mallow plant is the perfect source of food for them. Set includes three 1-oz containers and care instructions for larvae.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not pleased I ordered the smaller cups of larvae in order to give an individual experience to my students. The larvae haven't formed chrysalides as of yet, they don't seem to have enough room. Also they have begun eating the paper at the top of the containers

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for easy use! I ordered these caterpillars to demonstrate metamorphosis during an at-home preschool program. The caterpillars were easy to take care of (just had to put them in a safe place), and it was fun to watch! When they formed the chrysalis, we moved them to a larger container - and that was easy too! My girls loved watching the whole process and releasing the butterflies into their new home. Will definitely order again next year!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved by Students This product is great for teaching the life cycle of the butterfly to primary students. I've had great success with the survival rate of the caterpillar to their emergence as butterflies. I am disappointed in the extreme mark up for shipping and handling and am unsure how much longer I can use this fantastic teaching aide.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This is a good product. We haven't seen the butterflies appear, but we expect them to appear soon. The paper that the caterpillars attach themselves to was difficult to remove from the mini cup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Met expectations My daughter was pleased that the butterflies progressed from caterpillar to butterfly in such a short time.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't survive The caterpillars arrived 2 per tiny cup, covered in lids with no air holes. The food dried up and out of 24 caterpillars, only 3 successfully made cocoons. We are not sure if any of those 3 will complete the metamorphosis. We liked the large cup with 5 caterpillars that came with the pavilion much better.
