In the first investigation, students explore how spectroscopy can be used to evaluate concentration with sample solutions. In the second investigation, students conduct an experiment to study population growth in algae. Kit accommodates 10 groups of students.

Grades 9–12. Students investigate an algal bloom scenario and, in the process, explore factors that affect the carrying capacity of ecosystems. In the kit's first investigation, students explore how spectroscopy can be used to evaluate concentration with sample solutions. Students are tasked with using a Carolina® Spectroscopy Chamber (item #653355), a smartphone, and a color analyzer app to place the culture tubes in order from lowest to highest concentration. In doing this, students discover the patterns that exist between the data presented by the color analyzer app and the concentration of green food dye in the solution.

In the second investigation, students carefully conduct an experiment to study population growth in algae. They grow algae in culture tubes containing solutions with different concentrations of nutrients. Using the skills and information learned in the first investigation, students are able to monitor the change in algal concentrations in the different solutions. Students graph and analyze their data to estimate the carrying capacity for algae in their tubes. This information will be extrapolated to make sense of the present algal bloom phenomenon.

Students can conduct investigation 1 in 50 minutes. They can set up investigation 2 during a single 50-minute class period but then must take measurements (each requiring approximately 5 to 10 minutes) 3 times a week for 3 weeks.
