Grades 9-12. With this kit's activities, students observe a study site to determine population density and biomass. They record organisms present in the study site and construct a food chain and a food web based on those findings. Students use quadrat sampling to determine the population density of a target species. They then find the biomass of the target species and apply the ecological rule of thumb to relate the standing crop biomass and energy transfer between trophic levels.
