Product Highlights
Students investigate the metabolic process of cellular respiration in germinating pea seed. In the Guided Investigation, students use respirometers to measure the rate of respiration based on the rate of relative oxygen consumption. In the Inquiry Activity, students design an investigation to further explore cellular respiration. The 8-Station Kit includes enough materials for 8 groups. The 1-Station Kit includes materials for 1 group. The 8-Station Refill replaces consumed items.
Unit Connection
Unit 3: Cellular Energetics, topic 3.6: Cellular Respiration
Standards Connection
ENE-1 The highly complex organization of living systems requires constant input of energy and the exchange of macromolecules.
Time Requirements
The Pre-Lab takes approximately 30 minutes of preparation, the Guided Investigation takes approximately 90 minutes of preparation, and the Inquiry Investigation takes approximately 30 minutes of preparation.
The Pre-Lab takes approximately 20 minutes. The Guided Investigation takes approximately 50 minutes. The time required for the Inquiry Investigation will vary based on students' plans.
Digital Resources
Includes 1-year access to digital resources that support instruction. Digital resources may include a teacher manual and student guide, pre-lab activities and setup videos, simulations, and post-lab analysis and assessments.
Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills
Students should be familiar with the differences between cellular respiration and photosynthesis, the reactants and products of aerobic cellular respiration, the variables of the ideal gas law and how to manipulate the gas law equation, and calculating rate from graphed data.
