Product Highlights
Students investigate water loss in plants as they build toward an understanding of osmoregulation and plant responses to the environment. In the Guided Investigation, students construct and use a simple potometer to measure water loss from transpiration of bush bean seedlings. In the Inquiry Activity, students explore a question about one of the various factors that affect the rate of transpiration. Kit includes enough materials for 8 groups.
Unit Connection
Unit 8: Ecology, topic 8.1: Responses to the Environment
Standards Connection
ENE-3 Timing and coordination of biological mechanisms involved in growth, reproduction, and homeostasis depend on organisms responding to environmental cues.
Time Requirements
The Pre-Lab takes approximately 60 minutes of preparation, the Guided Investigation takes approximately 60 minutes of preparation and 2 weeks to grow the plants, and the Inquiry Investigation takes approximately 45 minutes of preparation.
The Pre-Lab takes approximately 45 minutes. The Guided Investigation takes approximately 50 minutes. The time required for the Inquiry Investigation will vary based on students' plans.
Digital Resources
Includes 1-year access to digital resources that support instruction. Digital resources may include a teacher manual and student guide, pre-lab activities and setup videos, simulations, and post-lab analysis and assessments.
Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills
Students should be familiar with basic plant anatomy, including the vascular tissues of plants; the process of photosynthesis; the properties of water, specifically hydrogen bonding and water potential; and the movement of water through a plant.
