Description

Addresses AP® Biology Big Idea 3 and Essential Knowledge 3.A.1, 3.A.3, and 3.C.1. Students learn how to perform gel electrophoresis. Once the technique is mastered, they use their skills to perform a simulated genetic analysis.

  • Aligned with Big Idea 3 and Essential Knowledge 3.A.1, 3.A.3, and 3.C.1
  • Emphasizes Science Practices 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7

Students learn how to perform gel electrophoresis as they begin to understand the roles of restriction enzymes, genetic inheritance, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in this key genetic engineering process. Following their initial experimentation, students dive deeper into the activity by working to optimize the technique and completing a simulated genetic screen.

The 8-Station Kit includes enough materials for a class of 32 students working in groups of 4. The 1-Station Kit includes materials for 1 group of 4 students. The digital teacher's manual is a 12-month eBook license to the Electrophoresis and Simulated Genetic Screen Kit teacher's manual. You can also access the digital student guide for this kit for free on Carolina Science Online®.
