Addresses AP® Biology Big Idea 3 and Essential Knowledge 3.A.1, 3.A.3, and 3.C.1. Students learn how to perform gel electrophoresis. Once the technique is mastered, they use their skills to perform a simulated genetic analysis.

  • Aligned with Big Idea 3 and Essential Knowledge 3.A.1, 3.A.3, and 3.C.1
  • Emphasizes Science Practices 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7

Students learn how to perform gel electrophoresis as they begin to understand the roles of restriction enzymes, genetic inheritance, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in this key genetic engineering process. Following their initial experimentation, students dive deeper into the activity by working to optimize the technique and completing a simulated genetic screen.

The 8-Station Kit includes enough materials for a class of 32 students working in groups of 4. The 1-Station Kit includes materials for 1 group of 4 students. The digital teacher's manual is a 12-month eBook license to the Electrophoresis and Simulated Genetic Screen Kit teacher's manual. You can also access the digital student guide for this kit for free on Carolina Science Online®.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Confusing instructions I am a second year teacher and did not attempt this lab last year. A quick glance at these instructions told me that I needed to call in my backup seasoned AP Biology teacher for assistance. After reading the instructions a few times she also confirmed that the directions could definitely be simplified. As an inexperienced teacher, I really needed the simple step-by-step directions for how to make the gels, what voltage and how long to run the gels, etc. The instructions were very inquiry-based, which I appreciate, but am just not on that level of comfort yet. My students did not get great results, but I'm unsure if it was due to errors on my end or theirs. Please include a simple, concise cookbook set of instructions and I will consider buying again. Until then I will be buying from other sources.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Incorrect DNA Samples Included! This is the second time I have ordered this kit. My students loved loading their gels. We purchased adjustable pipettes which made loading so much better than the transfer pipettes provided. We were analyzing the data and every group had the same fingerprint (some better than others), but none of the 8 groups match the provided answer key. I think there may be a problem with the DNA samples provided in this kit. They look nothing like they should and it has made analysis of the gels for diagnosis of CF impossible! (We ran the kit within two days of receiving it so I don't think that it was my fault the samples were bad and the first time I used this kit, it worked perfectly) From this experience, we did have a discussion about why you sometimes need to do an experiment more than once to get the correct data.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This kit allows students to experience an important biological research method The students enjoy preparing the gel trays, researching information before actually running the gels, and analyzing the results pretty much on their own! The student laboratory guide is comprehensive allowing students to experience this technique first hand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DNA is stored at room temperature and pipets used to manipulate DNA are included! This kit is easy to set up for teachers and easy for students to use! The included, disposable pipets mean schools don't need the expensive mechanical pipets to use this lab! The included agarose and buffer stains allow students to easily see their DNA moving through the gel. This lab can be used for a standard biology class as well as AP biology! Teachers do need to provide gel boxes and power boxes to run this lab.
