This select strain of the fern Ceratopteris was derived from 2 Japanese varieties of C. thalictroides that exhibited very rapid sporophyte development. Simple and economical, the gametophyte culture requires only a 15-W fluorescent bulb and small culture container. Culturing sporophytes to maturity is also easily accomplished.
The rapid life cycle of C-FERN Express™ - from spores to sexually mature gametophytes in 10 days and from fertilization to fertile sporophytes with viable spores in 55 days or less - improves studies of plant life cycles and alternation of generations.
