Meets AP® Chemistry topic 2. With just this kit, you can teach stoichiometry, acid-base chemistry, and Dalton's atomic theory. In the first part of the experiment, students determine the chemical formula of an unknown metal sulfate hydrate. After identifying the metal in the hydrate using a flame test, students thermally decompose the hydrate and calculate the number of waters of hydration from mass measurements. In the experiment's second part, students thermally decompose a compound to produce its water of constitution and 2 additional reaction products.

They then identify the products using mass data and the chemical reactivity of the resulting solid. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in pairs.
