Cypridina hilgendorfii. Collected from the sea near Japan, these desiccated organisms provide an example of a luciferin-luciferase system not requiring ATP for bioluminescence. Used by soldiers in World War II to provide a dim night-light; simply crush the animals in sand and water to get a blue luminescence. Make separate luciferin and luciferase preparations which, when mixed, will luminesce. Complete instructions included. This is a 1-g unit of desiccated sea fireflies.
