Meets AP® Chemistry experiment 15. In this experiment, students perform inorganic synthesis and quantitative gravimetric and volumetric analysis. Students synthesize a coordination compound and confirm its molecular formula by quantitative gravimetric analysis for sulfate and quantitative volumetric analysis (titration) for ammonia. The transition metal is confirmed by its wavelength of maximum absorbance. Students practice balancing chemical equations, calculating percent composition, calculating percent yield, and using a spectrophotometer.
